If you love the charm of Austrian towns, surrounded by breathtaking views while exploring the history, combined with magical Christmas Markets, you will love spending your Christmas Season in Salzburg.
Go on a musical journey to the site where the famous Christmas Carol „Silent Night“ was firstly performed or discover the original filming locations of the world-famous Hollywood blockbuster “The Sound of Music”. Ride the historic steamship to St. Wolfgang and the rack railway up the Schafberg. Another unforgettable experience is the romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through the magical winter wonderland. Salzburg during Christmas season is a truly memorable experience.
The arrival of Advent marks the beginning of an especially beautiful time of year in Salzburg. Winter in Salzburg means crisp chilly nights while exploring some of the most idyllic Christmas Markets in Austria and drinking a delicious and warm Glühwein.
ADVENT AT WOLFGANGSEE LAKE (SALZKAMMERGUT LAKE DISTRICT)
Not far from the city of Salzburg, you will find the beautiful Wolfgangsee lake. The Wolfgangsee Advent is one of the loveliest Christmas Markets in Austria. Mulled wine and hot punch will put you in a Christmas mood and the roasted chestnuts, gingerbread and baked apples for sale at the market’s little stands will tempt you with their traditional Christmas aromas. This market sparkles and glitters wherever you look. It’s a Christmas market that makes children’s eyes sparkle – and yours too!
BY BOAT TO ST. WOLFGANG
St. Wolfgang can be easily reached by water. Riding aboard a historic ship from St. Gilgen, you’ll feel the magic of the beautifully decorated villages on the shores of this famous lake even from the water.
BY THE RACK RAILWAY UP 1.364 METERS
St. Wolfgang is also the starting point for excursions aboard the historic rack railway up the Schafberg. A ride up the Schafberg is particularly attractive during the Christmas season. Not only a Christmassy decorated Advent kiosk with hot drinks awaits you there, but also an impressive, atmospheric view over the magical winter landscape of the Lake District.
HORSE-DRAWN SLEIGH RIDE
Alternatively you can do a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the magical winter wonderland between Lake Wolfgangsee and the Schafberg. You’ll pass snow-covered trees and the lake, with the snowy peaks of the surrounding mountains always in view. A real treat for all you romantics and pleasure-seekers out there.
SILENT NIGHT TOWN OBERNDORF
Salzburg is also the place where one of the world’s most popular Christmas carols was composed and firstly performed. “Silent Night, Holy Night” was performed for the first time on December 24, 1818 in the town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg.
